8/4 - Nixon continues to improve with his social skills.  He is shy when meeting new people at first but will warm everntually.  He really loves to play with other little highly active dogs so that is always a good ice breaker!  Nixon needs time to adjust in a new situation - he has to be given time & space and in a day, you will not believe the difference!  This little boy has been through alot so a loving, understanding, highly active home is just what he deserves.  If you think you are the right home for Nixon, please fill out an application online!
7/19 - Nixon is having a great time in his foster home!   He loves the yard and could run around for hours with his foster brothers and sisters!  Nixon walks well on the leash but he would love a yard to play in too.  He is very well crate trained - that is where he eats and sleeps.  Nixon hasn't had any problems with the cats either.  Nixon was surrendered to a shelter because his owners got a new puppy.  Nixon is only 5 1/2 months old!!  How very sad that he was replaced and for no reason.  He is affectionate and lovable.  He is a nice size too - kinda has a big dog look in a little dog's body.  With all those wrinkles in his forehead, he looks so serious!  I just love his markings - that one ear that is white is just so cute.  Please consider this little dog  - everyone deserves a happily ever after right??

This gorgeous boy is Nixon.  Nixon was surrendered to a shelter by his owners because they got a 'brand new puppy!!'  Nixon was not doing well in the shelter, scared and alone wondering where his family went and why he was there.  So much barking and people poking him.  He was terrified.  Our shelter friend called and said Nixon will be euthanized on the next day and would we possibly consider him.  So we took a chance and got him out.  Nixon was still scared when he went to his new foster home but his foster mom just let him be for awhile, talking to him but not pushing him to do anything he didn't want.  She let him watch her with the other dogs and he was very cautious at first, peeking out from behind the chairs.  But his tail would wag a little so maybe there was hope?  Then literally 4 hours after arriving something clicked with Nixon - it was like someone flipped a switch!  He ran over to his foster mom jumped on her lap and gave her a huge kiss!  His new family still gave him time and space but there was no more scared Nixon - he was part of the family!  Full of fun and following everyone everywhere, trying to get on laps and into beds.  To think this little guy was almost put to sleep!
he will need some training on his manners but it is nothing too terrible.  He seems to be housetrained too - but please expect accidents.  he is good in his crate and we will be testing him on a leash soon.  Nixon likes other dogs and he seems not to mind the cats.  Right now he is a little scared when new people come over but he just needs a few minutes and he does fine.  All of this is so new too him so it is not a surprise and I suspect he will get over that soon.

Unfortunately Nixon's story is pretty typical as little dogs do not do well in shelters in most situations.  If they are not adopted immediately (very young, tiny & fuzzy have the best chance) or rescued they are needlessly put to death.   When you adopt a dog like Nixon, you make room for another dog to be saved and placed into foster care.
