Shih Tzu (long coat) : : Female (spayed) : : Young : : Small
Learn more about the Shih Tzu. Introducing the beautiful Betty! Betty is a one year shihtzu mix that was initially found as a stray in Rochester. This little 10 pound baby was definitely someone’s baby. We do not know how long she had been a stray. We do know that when she was found, this poor little girl was severely matted all over her body, with dried poop, burrs, and gum stuck to her fur. It was so bad the shelter staff had to shave her completely down with a medical groom. The staff knew she didn’t need to stay there long, so just days before the blizzard, our volunteers drove out to pick her up. There was no way she would spend Christmas in the shelter if we could help it!
Betty has quickly settled into life in her foster home. Betty is a sweet and playful girl. She gets along great with the other dogs. She loves to play chase with them in the yard. Or even have her family toss her favorite pizza toy. Yep, you ask her “where’s your pizza” and Betty will find it every time. She is young and agile. Betty will leap and jump all around to get her toys. Betty absolutely loves her people, once she trusts them. She can be a little shy and wary around new people. She is always watching them and thinking, “what are you going to do?!” She would definitely benefit from having another young playful confident dog in her forever home. Someone for her to cuddle with and just show her the ropes. Once she trusts her people though, this little babe is stuck to them. There is no such thing as personal space with Betty. She will be on your lap, on your chest, on your head, and have her face in yours while giving you tons and tons of kisses! At night she will sleep in top of you. If you are home, Betty has to be near you. When you leave, Betty is extremely sad and will cry. It doesn’t matter where you go, even if it’s the basement, Betty will stand at the gate and cry for you. She does settle down once she learns your routine and knows you are coming back home. So no worries when you go to work, Betty will not cry the whole time or destroy your home. Betty is completely crate trained and is doing excellent on her house training. In fact since the blizzard, she has not had an accident in the house. There is always a period of adjustment so please be prepared for those initial accidents and be patient.
Betty is a bit of a busybody. She feels the need to stare out the window and sound the alarm, every time someone walks by your house, or if she hears a strange noise. Her bark is high pitched and loud! She is not suited for life in an apartment. Because she was a stray, and escaped once, she will most likely try again. Once she is loose, she will run. She does not come when she is called when outside. She comes in when she is ready. Sometimes it’s right away, other times it’s after you have tried everything to coax her in and given up. Everything to Betty is a game. Life is all about fun. For these reasons a fully fenced-in yard is required for her. Sorry, no electric or invisible fences. If you think Betty is the right match for you, please make sure to apply today! You won’t be disappointed or ever lonely with this leggy girl around
