Learn more about the Chihuahua. Learn more about the Dachshund.

Poppy is available for adoption!  This handsome and unusual looking boy hails from Texas originally where he was rescued from horrid conditions with his canine family.  We believe they are mixed breed dogs, all small.  Chihuahua, dachshund and Min Pin seem to be the most prevalent.  WithPoppy's bright blue eyes, we know it is likely double merle/dapple mix breed in there.  We also know that because of this, Poppy is hearing impaired,  But before you move on  - take a minute to read about this special dog!

First and foremost, in spite of his lacking of hearing, Poppy is a happy and affectionate dog and if you didn't know he was deaf, you would only see a loving little dog that just likes to be pet and loved!  Deaf dogs learn to pay close attention to their surroundings to understand what is going on.  He follows the other dogs in his foster home and responds to their cues on going outside and coming in.  We think it is imperative that he has at least one other dog in his home to learn from.  He does well with small and medium size dogs and should be ok with larger, gentle dogs.  He is a busy boy that needs toys and chewies to keep him occupied.  He thinks everything is a toy so you have to make sure he has his own!

Poppy watches for his foster mom to give him attention!  He immediately smiles and comes running to get his share of love.  He is always jumping up on her legs letting her know he is there.  Poppy is still a little shy when you reach to pick him up and hold him - he is just not used to it. He likes to be pet and get attention but he is unsure of being picked up right now.  Just like his brother, his tail never stops wagging.  Poppy is happy to snuggle under his foster mom's desk while she works and follows her whenever she gets up.

Poppy can feel vibrations but does not always respond to them so we sometimes have to wake him up to let him know it's time to start the day!  Poppy is not happy in a crate, even with his brother.  He will cry and whine.  He would be happier in a gated area when left alone.  He is slowly being introduced to a leash but is still learning.  Poppy will require a fenced in yard (NO invisible fences) in his new home and off-leashing will never be allowed,  Remember, he cannot hear you call him to come back or if cars are approaching if he is near a street.  Poppy is good about going outside but he is faster to come inside now that it is colder.   He is currently wearing a belly band when he can't be monitored.  Kids would be fine as long as they are older and understand Poppy cannot hear.

Poppy is neutered, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated and tested neg. for heartworm.  His adoption fee is $350 but IF he is adopted with another Pixie Mamas dog, we will lower it to $300.
