Learn more about the Chihuahua.

Mystique was found abandoned in the street, nursing her six puppies, who were only 2 weeks old.  She faced danger, hunger, pain and fear – and protected her children in those unsafe streets till she was rescued.

She was truly a loving mother – we recently learned that one of her puppies wasn’t even hers!  She nursed and raised an orphaned pup as her own.  She taught ALL of the pups how to survive and thrive in their forever homes.  And she knows that family is more than just blood relatives.

Mystique is a 2 year old chihuahua mix.  Her fur is a thick cream color, with rusted-rose colored angel kisses on her forehead – the exact place where you kiss your children goodnight.  She has blush colored ears and one single copper raindrop at the base of her short & stubby, squared-off tail.  She has very soulful eyes, you can see the tough choices she has had to make and the strength it took to make them staring back at you.  She loves to cuddle. She does not, however love to be picked up & carried around.  You can lift her to move her from one place to another – like when she takes over the entire pillow and there is no room for your head.  Or when she has settled into the absolute center of the blanket, trapping you against the mattress with no wiggle room.  She seems very anxious when she is tightly contained in someone’s arms.  She wants to be with her people, but she doesn’t want to be restrained by her people.

Mystique is a good watch dog– and bark to warn you of any new people in the vicinity.  She will make her point, and then settle.  There is no random barking chorus with her, no constant pleas for attention.  She says her piece and expects her people to listen the first time.  Her foster mom works, so she uses potty pads during the day.  It is clear she would rather potty outside.  As with any new dog in a new situation, there may be accidents as she adjusts to a new routine.

She has a fenced in yard at her foster mom’s house, but also does great on a leash & harness.  She is a little shy when she is out & about, but does let people pet her.  She still isn’t sure if she trusts the girls in the drive-thru window yet…the jury is still out on that one.  Mystique is a climber – she can put her dainty little feet into the holes of chain link (or a baby gate) and be up & over the wall in a few minutes.  She would need to be supervised in a chain link fenced yard, at least until she is used to her new home.

She plays well with the other dogs in her foster home, but always is first in line for cuddles - stepping on her sisters to be noticed and recognized.  She will sleep nose-to-nose with you on the pillow if you let her and certainly does not want to get up in the middle of the night to go outside.  Mystique had a very rough start to life, but that hasn’t slowed her down or changed her joyful outlook.  Like every mother – the children come first.  Now that all of her pups are safely adopted into forever homes, it is Mystique’s turn.

Mystique is spayed, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated and tested neg. for heartworm.  Her adoption fee is $400
