Darla came to us as an urgent plea for help. Although we are unsure of her previous life, judging by the condition in which we received her, we can only conclude it was not fit for any living being. Darla is approximately 5 years old and the sweetest dog you could ever ask for. She somehow ended up in a shelter emaciated and scared. Due to her medical condition, the shelter reached out to rescue for help. Unfortunately, Darla is heartworm positive She is not only extremely underweight, she has a massively enlarged heart and has trouble breathing due to the inflammation in her lungs from the heartworms. She is in dire condition and being cared for in an experienced medical foster home under the close care of a veterinarian in Tennessee. Even though Darla is in rough shape the vet does feel she may have a chance at recovering. He is confident Darla is not in any pain and her symptoms right now are equivalent to a person with COPD. Of course, that can change at any moment as the next step for her would be heart failure. We are hoping never to reach that point! At this time the treatment plan is simple: Darla needs love, rest and to put on some much needed weight before any further treatment can be considered. Her symptoms are being managed with medication. She is going in for weekly weight checks, blood work and x-rays so we can watch her other organs closely. This will be touch and go and the vet said we will be reevaluating her treatment week by week or possibly day by day. We can say Darla is a little fighter! She is happy to be alive, happy to be loved and her tail wags non stop! Until that changes Pixie Mamas will fight right with her! We will give her every chance possible. We will hope and pray Darla pulls through and gets the happy ever after she deserves!
Not only is heartworm devastating to the dog it is VERY expensive to treat! She is the fourth dog we have taken in that ended up being positive. Her case is probably the worst and she by far needs the most medical care to safely treat the heartworms while keeping her other organs functioning properly. Thank you for reading Darla’s story and thank you as always for your continued support! We could never do what we do without you!
